Sir Mortimer Barnett Davis (February 6, 1866 – March 22, 1928) was a Jewish Canadian businessman and philanthropist. [1] The mansion that he built in Montreal's Golden Square Mile has been renamed Purvis Hall and is today owned by McGill University .
The Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research (LDI) is the research arm of the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital and has strong academic ties to McGill University. Founded in 1969, the LDI has a roster of nearly 200 researchers, and it is an important North American biomedical research institute.
Henriette Marie Meyer, Lady Davis, CBE (1872–1963) was a Jewish-Canadian philanthropist. She was known as Lady Davis after her husband, Sir Mortimer Davis , was knighted in 1917. [ 1 ] [ 2 ]
To date, the foundation has supported about 1700 scholars all around the world including visiting professors, postdoctoral and doctoral researchers in Science, Engineering, Arts and Literature to serve as a Lady Davis Fellow. The fellowship is named after the wife of Sir Mortimer Davis, Henriette Marie Meyer.
Many of the Golden Square Mile homes that he designed were later purchased by McGill University, including the Sir Mortimer Davis House (now Purvis Hall). Findlay designed the Calvary Congregational Church (1911) in Westmount, located at the intersection of Greene Street and Dorchester Boulevard (demolished in 1961).
