The University of the West of Scotland (Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh na h-Alba an Iar), formerly the University of Paisley, is a public university with four campuses in south-western Scotland, in the towns of Paisley, Blantyre, Dumfries and Ayr, as well as a campus in London, England.
Paisley is the main site for the modern University of the West of Scotland, which was created from a merger between the University of Paisley and Bell College in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire. The University of Paisley was granted university status in 1992, having existed previously as a central institution known as Paisley College of Technology.
John Joseph Macklin (9 October 1947 – August 2014 [1]) was a Northern Irish scholar of Hispanic studies.He held posts at a number of British universities, and from 2001 to 2005 was principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Paisley (now the University of the West of Scotland).
On 1 August 2007 Bell College merged with the University of Paisley to form the largest 'modern' (post-1992) Scottish University. The amalgamated body began life as the University of Paisley, but applied to be renamed as 'The University of the West of Scotland'. This change came into effect on 30 November 2007.

It was founded on 8 October 1808 with the aim of educating members in scientific matters, creating a museum and establishing a library.
