Lake County Sheriff's House and Jail, also known as the Sheriff's House, is a historic jail and residence located at 226 South Main Street in Crown Point, Lake County, Indiana, United States. It was built in 1882, and is a two-story, Second Empire style brick building. It has a three-story projecting tower and a mansard roof.
The modern Lake County Jail opened in 1975 in a five-floor facility with 286 beds. In 1991, capacity was increased to 460 beds and additions in 2000 provided for a total of 1,085 beds. [ 16 ] A Special Operations Response Team (SORT) is utilized in controlling inmate disturbances and restoring order in emergency situations.
Crown Point is a city in and the county seat of Lake County, Indiana, United States. [4] The population was 33,899 at the 2020 census.The city was incorporated in 1868. On October 31, 1834, Solon Robinson and his family became the first settlers to an area that later became Crown Point.
The current Sheriff is U.S. Marine Corps veteran Peyton C. Grinnell who was elected November, 2016 in the Lake County general election. [1] He succeeds Sheriff Gary Borders (d. Nov. 2021), who was appointed by Governor Jeb Bush following the death of Sheriff Chris Daniels in 2006, and was subsequently elected in 2008, and 2012.
At the time the county was created, three towns were vying to be the County Seat, Lake Court House (the name for Crown Point), Liverpool and West Point. [6] In 1839 the County Commissioners picked Liverpool as the County Seat. Local dissatisfaction brought the state into the process and the following year (1840), Lake Court House was selected.

Crown Point Courthouse Square Historic District is a historic district in Crown Point, Indiana, that dates back to 1873. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Its boundaries were changed in 2005, and it was increased in 2007 to include a Moderne architecture building at 208 Main Street. [ 1 ]
