Ribblehead Viaduct is the longest and the third tallest structure on the Settle–Carlisle line. The viaduct was designed by John Sydney Crossley, chief engineer of the Midland Railway, who was responsible for the design and construction of all major structures along the line. The viaduct was necessitated by the challenging terrain of the route.

The route, which crosses the remote, scenic regions of the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines, runs between Settle Junction, on the Leeds–Morecambe line, and Carlisle, near the English-Scottish borders.

The station, situated 52 miles 17 chains (84 km) north-west of Leeds, serves the area of Ribblehead in North Yorkshire, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains. The station is located at the southern end of the Ribblehead Viaduct, which spans a length of 400 metres (1,300 ft) over Batty Moss.
