Tritium radioluminescence is the use of gaseous tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, to create visible light. Tritium emits electrons through beta decay and, when they interact with a phosphor material, light is emitted through the process of phosphorescence .
This is a self-illuminating map reading torch. It does not require batteries or recharging & will remain constantly illuminated even during prolonged periods of darkness. Illumination is provided by Betalights®, gaseous tritium light sources that provide an absolutely reliable luminance throughout their service life of 10 years.
Radioluminescence is the phenomenon by which light is produced in a material by bombardment with ionizing radiation such as alpha particles, beta particles, or gamma rays. Radioluminescence is used as a low level light source for night illumination of instruments or signage.

Although betavoltaics use a radioactive material as a power source, the beta particles are low energy and easily stopped by a few millimetres of shielding. With proper device construction (that is, proper shielding and containment), a betavoltaic device would not emit dangerous radiation.

This is similar to the situation in a hydrogen flame. Arc lamps made with ordinary light-hydrogen provide a very similar UV spectrum to deuterium, and have been used in UV spectroscopes. However, lamps using deuterium have a longer life span and an emissivity (intensity) at the far end of their UV range which is three to five times that of an ...
