The majority of Smith Mountain Cooperative WMA (4,022 acres [16.28 km 2]) is located in Pittsylvania County, with the remainder (973 acres [3.94 km 2]) in Bedford County. The WMA covers ten miles (16 km) of Smith Mountain Lake 's southeastern shoreline on either side of Smith Mountain Dam , and comprises the majority of Smith Mountain.

The land it is built on was initially bought and developed by water sports innovator Herb O'Brien in 1972. O'Brien, drawing from his water sports experiences as a young man, envisioned Radar Lake to be an isolated and private area where enthusiasts could come and enjoy not only the thrill of the sport but also the pristine natural environment.
