The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II [N 1] is an American tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range sup sonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber that was developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the United States Navy. [4]
The model requested was designated the F-4K by McDonnell Douglas and received the British service designation Phantom FG.1. Ordered in July 1964, [ 93 ] this was the first time the U.S. permitted export of the Phantom, with the first F-4K flying on 27 June 1966.
The company was founded on July 6, 1939, by James Smith McDonnell, and was best known for its military fighters, including the F-4 Phantom II, and crewed spacecraft including the Mercury capsule and Gemini capsule. McDonnell Aircraft later merged with the Douglas Aircraft Company to form McDonnell Douglas in 1967.
