Oxalis triangularis, commonly called false shamrock, is a species of perennial plant in the family Oxalidaceae. It is native to several countries in southern South America . This woodsorrel is typically grown as a houseplant but can be grown outside in USDA climate zones 8a–11, preferably in light shade.
Oxalis (/ ˈ ɒ k s ə l ɪ s / (American English) [1] or / ɒ k s ˈ ɑː l ɪ s / (British English)) [2] is a large genus of flowering plants in the wood-sorrel family, Oxalidaceae, comprising over 550 species. [3]
Oxalis tetraphylla var. tetraphylla is the variety most commonly used as an ornamental plant, either potted or in gardens as ground cover.The other two variants are very similar and their green parts (and flowers) look practically identical.
All parts of the plant are edible – flowers, leaves, stems, and bulb. Oxalis is from the Greek word meaning sour, and this plant has a sour juice. It is used in salads. Moderate use of plant is advisable, as it should not be eaten in large quantities due to a high concentration of oxalic acid, ("salt of lemons") which can be poisonous. [13]
As the name would imply, this species of Oxalis typically has pink to violet flowers [7] with petals 10–15 mm long. [8] This species has "Plants arising from a thick, woody, irregularly nodulate-segmented rhizome often with persistent, thickened, and lignescent petiole bases; flowers 3–12 in umbelliform cymes, less commonly in irregular cymes". [9]
Allium hollandicum is a bulb-forming perennial with scapes up to 90 cm (35 in) tall. It has long, flat, strap-shaped leaves up to 60 cm (24 in) long. Umbels are relatively small and spherical, up to 10 cm (3.9 in) in diameter, composed of many purple to reddish-purple star-shaped flowers appearing in late spring and early summer. [11] [12] [13]
