The fraternity was founded on October 4, 1968, by students from the University of the Philippines Diliman. [2] Initially known as the "Order of the U.P. Triskelions", the organization later on changed its name to the "Order of the Grand Triskelions", then later "Triskelions Grand Fraternity" which was then changed into the Greek letter name Tau Gamma Phi, in line with other student fraternities.

Alpha Gamma Sigma joined the National Interfraternity Conference on June 19, 1971. [3] Alpha Gamma Sigma absorbed the local IlliDell Cooperative Fraternity at the University of Illinois as the IlliDell chapter in January 1981; the new chapter's name broke with the fraternity's Greek letter nomenclature to honor the predecessor's history. On January 17, 1969, Tau Gamma Sigma was founded by ten women from the University of the Philippines Diliman. The founders were friends of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity founders. The women were all political science students and members of the same political science club as the founders of Tau Gamma Phi.
