It lies on the shore of the Rio Negro. The market was constructed between 1880 and 1883. The building was based on the Les Halles marketplace of Paris, France.
On September 5, 1850, the Province of Amazonas was created by Imperial Law No. 1,592, whose first president was João Batista de Figueiredo Tenreiro Aranha, appointed on July 27, 1851.
