The harlequin duck (Histrionicus histrionicus) is a small sea duck. It takes its name from Harlequin (Italian Arlecchino, French Arlequin ), a colourfully dressed character in Commedia dell'arte . The species name comes from the Latin word "histrio", meaning "actor".
The tale is set in Potter's Lake District farm, Hill Top. [1] Her biographer Judy Taylor suggests that a drawing by Beatrix's father, Rupert Potter, of a flying duck wearing a bonnet, may have been a forerunner of Jemima Puddle-Duck, [2] and indeed there is a painting of Jemima flying in a bonnet in the book.
