The first motor omnibus in Sri Lanka was imported in 1907 and bus transport began in Sri Lanka as an owner-operated service. There was no regulation, so when more than one bus operated on a single route, there was a scramble for the load. By the mid-1930s, malpractices in pursuit of maximum profit began to compromise safety and comfort.

Kandana (Sinhala: කඳාන, Tamil: கந்தானை) is a suburb of Gampaha in Western Province, Sri Lanka, 19 km (12 mi) north of the Colombo city centre.Due to the proximity to Negombo as well as the Bandaranaike International Airport, the suburb is a popular residential area.
The project, headed by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and built by the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company, was expected to be completed by 11 April 2012. It consists of four new 1,200-metre-long (3,900 ft) terminals which can accommodate three berths each, alongside a depth of 18 m (59 ft) (which can be deepened to 23 m [75 ft]).
