For similar reasons, the R-value per inch also depends on the temperature of the material, usually increasing with decreasing temperature (polyisocyanurate again being an exception); a nominally R-13 fiberglass batt may be R-14 at −12 °C (10 °F) and R-12 at 43 °C (109 °F). [20]
The generalised chemical structure of polyisocyanurate showing the isocyanurate group. The polyols are abbreviated as R-groups.. Polyisocyanurate (/ ˌ p ɒ l ɪ ˌ aɪ s oʊ s aɪ ˈ æ nj ʊər eɪ t /), also referred to as PIR, polyol, or ISO, is a thermoset plastic [1] typically produced as a foam and used as rigid thermal insulation.
Closed-cell foams are superior insulators. While open-cell foams typically have R-values of 3 to 4 per inch (RSI-0.53 to RSI-0.70 per inch), closed-cell foams can attain R-values of 5 to 8 per inch (RSI-0.88 to RSI-1.41 per inch). This is important if space is limited, because it allows a thinner layer of insulation to be used.
Typical R-values are given for various materials and structures as approximations based on the average of available figures and are sorted by lowest value. R-value at 1 m gives R-values normalised to a 1 metre (3 ft 3 in) thickness and sorts by median value of the range.
As a result of the high thermal resistance of the gas, spray polyurethane insulation typically has an initial R-value around R-3.4 to R-6.7 per inch. [6] In comparison, glass wool typically has an R-Value of only R-3 to R-4 per inch. [7] Foam insulation blocks all three forms of heat transfer: Conductive heat transfer

Polyisocyanurate (also known as polyiso). More stable at high temperatures and less flammable than polyurethane. Higher R-value vs. polystyrene and polyurethane due to its gas-filled closed-cell foam structure. Denser and more rigid than polystyrene panels, but more expensive. Must protect from prolonged exposure to water.
