From the 8th century a church has been on the site, initially a wooden Anglo-Saxon church. By 1135 a stone Norman church was present. The church was rebuilt in the decorated style in 1320. In 1385–86 Sir Hugh Calveley endowed it as a collegiate church, [6] which resulted in more rebuilding: much of the existing structure dates from this time. [7]

The church building measures 160 by 80 feet (49 by 24 m) with a 162.5-foot (49.5 m) tower over the front Gable. At the time it was built, St. Boniface Church was the tallest structure in Sioux City. [2] The exterior is clad with brick from Buffalo, New York and the trim is in Bedford limestone.
