The most substantial trail is the 8-mile (13 km) Cooper Mountain Loop Trail, which circles through several miles of the state forest on the slopes of Cooper Mountain before reentering the state park near Overton Lodge. It is sited on 480 acres (1.9 km 2) in upper Cave Creek Canyon with elevations ranging from 3,800 feet (1,200 m) to 5,450 feet (1,660 m) above sea level. Cave Creek originates inside the Oregon Caves emerges near the Chateau. The creek flows westward through a steep canyon out of the monument. [6]
Cave Junction's main point of interest is the Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve, which is a 4,554-acre (1,843 ha) area of hiking trails and caverns. Located at the end of a 20-mile (32 km) "stomach churning" drive along State Route 46, there are limestone caves discovered in 1874 by a hunter and his dog.
The forest was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 as part of the Overton Park Historic District. [2] Tree identification began in 1997, with some 70 tree species identified by 2002 when it was certified as an arboretum. Today the arboretum contains walking trails with 49 tree markers identifying 32 species.
Overton Park was designed by landscape architect George Kessler as part of a comprehensive plan that also included Riverside Park (later M.L. King Riverside Park) and the Memphis Parkway System. The planning began in 1901, and Overton Park was established in 1906. [2] [3] The park is named in honor of John Overton, a co-founder of Memphis. [4]
The Cave Creek Inn was built in 1920 and is Cave Creek's longest operating commercial building. It is now occupied by a restaurant. The Cave Creek Service Station was built in 1925. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. [5] Frontier Town, which is also pictured, is located at 6245 E. Cave Creek Road.
