Purves became an active supporter of women's golf. In 1872, the Wimbledon Golf Club had laid out a nine-hole course for women and created the Wimbledon Ladies Golf Club. [13] Purves arranged and presided over a meeting of the 15 ladies' golf clubs in the UK in 1893 which led to the formation of the Ladies' Golf Union (LGU) later that year.
The country club was eventually rebranded as the "Richmond Golf Club" in the early 1930s. The golf club has views towards the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge and Mount Tamalpais.
