All three sections of the test must be passed in order to pass the CBEST. Raw scores can range from 1–50, which are then converted to scaled scores ranging from 20–80. The passing scaled score on each section of the test is 41, and a minimum total score of 123 for all three sections must be achieved to pass. [5]
These must be completed 10 days before or after 85% of a school's year has passed. The California Standards Tests (CSTs) are designed to match the state's academic content standards for each grade. Grades 2 through 8 tests cover mathematics and English/language arts (which includes writing in grades 4 and 7).
The top grade, A, is given here for performance that exceeds the mean by more than 1.5 standard deviations, a B for performance between 0.5 and 1.5 standard deviations above the mean, and so on. [17] Regardless of the absolute performance of the students, the best score in the group receives a top grade and the worst score receives a failing grade.
In another case, if the annual grade is 4 and the exam score is 5, the final grade will be 5. Similarly, if the annual grade is 5 and the exam score is 4, the final grade will still be 5 because the arithmetic mean of 4.5 is rounded up to 5. If the annual grade is 4 and the exam score is 3, the final grade will be 4.
Up to 2 test (or 8) opportunities were available to students before the end of their senior year. The test was originally intended to be required of students graduating in 2004, but full implementation was delayed until the class of 2006. Approximately 90% of students ultimately passed by the end of the 2005-2006 school year. [2]
Scores of "passing"—or of "3" on a 4-point, 6-point, or 9-point scale—provide little concrete guidance for the student, the teacher, or the researcher. In educational barrier exams, holistic scoring may serve administrators in locating which students did not pass but little serve teachers in helping those students pass on a second try.
The ECTS system initially divided students between pass and fail groups and then assessed the performance of these two groups separately. Those obtaining passing grades were divided into five subgroups: the best 10% are awarded an A grade, the next 25% a B grade, the following 30% a C, the following 25% a D and the final 10% an E.
Code 2 (E): 30% - 39% Code 1 (F): 0% - 29% The OBE system, when in its experimental stages, originally used a scale from 1 - 4 (a pass being a 3 and a '1st class pass' being above 70%), but this system was considered far too coarse and replaced by a scale from 1 to 7.
