The road is entirely single carriageway, except in the Yeovil and Bristol built-up areas, at Ilchester (where it multiplexes with the A303), and north of Dorchester. The road is one of the main routes connecting Bristol to the county of Dorset and is also a popular non-motorway route from Bristol to Exeter and Cornwall via the A303.

Westbury Park is a suburb of the city of Bristol, United Kingdom.It lies to the east of Durdham Down between the districts of Redland and Henleaze.The area is very similar in character to nearby Redland and comprises mainly Victorian and early twentieth-century architecture, along with a selection of Georgian buildings.
The North Fringe had over 67,000 jobs in 2001. [3] It now has severe road traffic congestion problems, particularly on the main roads, the A4174 and A38, as well as the motorways themselves. Developments immediately to the east of this area and the M32, for instance at Emersons Green, are sometimes referred to as the East Fringe of Bristol.
Building commenced on Hillfields Park Housing estate in 1919, and the estate was first to be built under the National Housing Scheme in Bristol. Hillfields was further expanded in 1922 when the new Elisha Smith Robinson paper and printing company opened in Filwood Road, Fishponds, and the company arranged for houses to be built at Maple Avenue to accommodate the new workers.
South Bristol is the part of Bristol, England south of the Bristol Avon. It is almost entirely made up of the areas of the city historically in Somerset , and since the abolition of the county Avon , consists of the southern suburbs in the county of Bristol.
