The western or lower mouth of Box Elder Canyon is located approximately 56 miles (90 km) north of Salt Lake City, Utah, via Interstate 15 and US 91. The joint routes of US 89 / US 91 join together at 1100 South Main Street to the west and enter Box Elder Canyon 2 miles (3.2 km) east of downtown Brigham City.

US-89 / US-91 traverses Box Elder Canyon , Dry Canyon, and Wellsville Canyon, beginning east of Brigham City as a four-lane highway, curving north then northeast and entering Cache Valley at Wellsville .
The two routes head east up Box Elder Canyon in the southern Wellsville Mountains, finally leaving the valley of the Great Salt Lake into a small valley that contains Mantua Reservoir (elevation 5200 feet/1585 m).

Box Elder Peak is located 21 miles (34 km) southeast of downtown Salt Lake City in the Lone Peak Wilderness, on land managed by Wasatch–Cache National Forest. [4] The peak is set in the Wasatch Range which is a subset of the Rocky Mountains. The mountain is composed of limestone, quartzite, and shale. [2]
Mantua lies at the head of Box Elder Canyon on the northern, western, and southern sides of the Mantua Reservoir. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.6 square miles (15 km 2), of which 4.9 square miles (13 km 2) are land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km 2) (13.21%) is water.
