The reason people don't recommend farming Canadian nightcrawlers is that they require more attention than you really get back in terms of them multiplying. If you treat them well they will thrive and breed so that you can start fishing in spring with around 120 worms. Also, these nightcrawlers are really interesting to watch.
Canadian Crawlers are bigger than the European Crawlers by far. the European crawlers are more able to handle warmer temps. Breeding crawlers is slow and unproductive. Have been able to breed a few but not many. If you want to raise worms Red wigglers is the way to go. Problem with them is they don't get very big.
Yes, the canaidian and african nightcrawlers are harder to raise then european nightcrawlers. The number one reason is that they do not like to be disturbed. Secondly, the european nightcrawler is a composting worm and will die in soil alone, unless there is alot of organic matter! Red worms are the same way and they can be raised togather.

I took a plastic drum and took some mulched up grass clippings and leaves and mixed them with some topsoil. Went to wally world and got 3-4 cups of canadian nightcrawlers and dumped them in. I keep the drum in the basement where it stays cool. Only have one exposed wall. From what I have read the canadian worms get bigger, but harder to raise.
The nightcrawlers that Walmart and other retailers sell here are labeled "Canadian Nightcrawlers". When I was a kid in the '60s in New Orleans I used to hunt for nightcrawlers in our neighborhood ball field with a flashlight and a coffee can after a light rain.
Canadian Nightcrawlers can be obtained almost anywhere in abundance. Green River Worms requires a lot of digging, a lot of scouting, not to mention the time and the gas just to get to where they are. I would say 20 bucks a dozen would be about right!
I have a worm bed that I keep nightcrawlers in.I start out with top soil, then add some dry cow poop and a little corn meal.Mix it all up and there you go.Just make sure you keep it moist(not wet).I usually put coffee grounds out of the coffee pot in there too along with used tea bags.Thats how I do it.

Nightcrawlers are a all around great bait for many different species of fish and they are easy to keep alive. The first thing is you don't want to leave them in the sun, they need to be kept in the shade and preferably where it is cool. I always keep them in the refrigarator.
