Mary Helen Wingate Lloyd (1868–1934) was an American horticulturist who was a founding member of the American Iris Society and creator of a celebrated "iris bowl" garden. Wingate was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1868, one of four children of George Wood Wingate and Susan Prudence (Man) Wingate.
The Queen Mother visited the Stevens' gardens during her 1966 tour and reportedly left 'with an armful of slips and cuttings'. [2] Stevens continued to win prestigious awards for her cultivars, including the British Iris Society's Foster Memorial Plaque (1953) and the American Iris Society's hybridisers' medal (1955).
