Valle Crucis in an unincorporated community and census-designated place located in Watauga County, North Carolina, United States.The name of the town is Latin for "Vale of the Cross," a reference to a valley in the area where three streams converge to form a shape similar to an archbishop's cross. In the early 1900s, there were 328 plantations identified in North Carolina from extant records. [ 10 ] [ 8 ] [ 9 ] The Sloop Point plantation in Pender County, built in 1729, is the oldest surviving plantation house and the second oldest house surviving in North Carolina, after the Lane House (built in 1718–1719 and not part of a plantation).
NC 81 was designated in 1934 as a renumbering of NC 10 from US 25 (current Biltmore Avenue) to US 70/US 74 (current US 74A). [3] The road was then extended in 1937 when US 25 was rerouted in Asheville. NC 81 was placed south along Biltmore Avenue to the current end of the road at the intersection of US 25 and US 25A.
The Aurora mine is the largest integrated phosphate mining and chemical plant in the world. [1] The mine is located in Richland Township, in Aurora in Beaufort County, North Carolina . The museum provides information about the geological history of the Aurora area, which is known as a center for fossil hunting (especially due to the phosphate mine). [4] The museum was founded in 1976 and opened in 1978 as a collaboration between the town of Aurora, local mines, East Carolina University , and other interested parties.
