The college began as a school, the Al Madrasathul Khairiyyathul Islamiah.Founded by Marhoom Sidde Lebbe Image, Marhoom Wapichi Marikkar and Ahmed Urabi Pasha, Marhoom Ahmed Orabi Pasha, at the school's opening ceremony on 15 November 1884 (First Muslim School in Sri Lanka), Ahmed Orabi made a speech on the importance of the new school to Sri Lanka's Muslim community.

He began his education at the Hameed Al Husseinie College (former Hameediya Arabic School), followed by Cathedral College Kotahena, finishing his schooling at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia. Kaleel then attended the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated with a medical degree, which he followed with post-graduate qualifications in medicine

Hameed Al Husseinie College, Sri Lanka's first school for Muslims was established on 15 November 1884 and after eight years Zahira College, was established on 22 August 1892 under his patronage. In May 1901, Khedive Abbas II , Tewfik's son and successor permitted ʻUrabi to return to Egypt.
Husseini taught at Shaw University, Smith College, and the University of Maryland. [3] He gave a lecturer at Duke University. [3] He wrote The Palestine Problem and Toward Peace in Palestine in 1974. [3] He was a member of the Organization of Arab Students. [4]
