Pie Jesu" (/ ˈ p iː. eɪ ˈ j eɪ. z uː,-s uː / PEE-ay-YAY-zu; original Latin: "Pie Iesu" /ˈpi.e ˈje.su/) is a text from the final (nineteenth) couplet of the hymn "Dies irae", and is often included in musical settings of the Requiem Mass as a motet. The phrase means "pious Jesus" in the vocative.
He followed a French Baroque tradition by not setting the Requiem sequence (the Dies irae), only its section Pie Jesu. He slightly altered the texts of the Introit , the Kyrie , Pie Jesu , Agnus Dei , and In Paradisum , but substantially changed the text of the Offertory (described below).
