Here in Ontario we have 20x40 M size and then 20x60M size arenas. You can school alright in a 20x40 but it is nicer to have a little more space if available. Our sand space is 20x40 and then an extra bit on the side as well as we had to thin the sand out and made the riding area wider.

Also the correct size for short arena dressage tests, if that floats your boat. Agree that 20x40 is the size of a short dressage arena but you do not have to ride in an arena that big.
Pleasure Riding Arena: 60′ x 120′. Small Dressage Arena: 66′ x 131′ (20 m x 40 m) Large Dressage Arena: 66′ x 197′ (20 m x 60 m) Reining Arena: 100′ x 200′ minimum, 150′ x 300′ better. Working Cow (Reigning Cow) Arena: 60′ x 120′ min, 75′ x 165′ better. Roping Arena: 150-by-300 space for a roping arena. The bigger ...
Since sizes for games and jumping arenas can and do vary, learning to ride in large or small teaches them to better rate and control their horses under all conditions they encounter. What ever you can make, do as large as possible with some type of "visible" boundary markers so the ring is known as "the ring".
My friends barrel race, calf-rope and jump....their arena is around those dimensions and all activities can be done comfortably for horses between 15 -16 hands on average. My arena is 130' x 200'. We can move along even with 3 riders astride at the same time. You just need to steer.

Thanks! My arena is 90x150 and it is ok for two horses if both are careful to be considerate, but three horses means mostly walking with some trotting. It is a good size for one horse! For six horses would want one 200x300, easier to just ride in the pasture with that many horses. Standard Dressage arena is 66x198 and intended to work only one ...
Visit site. There are quite a few indoor schools that are 30 x15 because that's a size of barn that land owners can get an almost automatic planning consent on for use for farming. They are then quietly used for riding in. I have ridden horses in one that is 30 yards by 12+ yards and that would have been fine for ponies.

Ideally, if I could have any size area and money/space wasn't an issue, I would have an arena big enough to put in a standard size barrel pattern ...
