Salva Kiir Mayardit (born 13 September 1951), [3] commonly known as Salva Kiir, is a South Sudanese politician who has been the President of South Sudan since its independence on 9 July 2011. Prior to independence, he was the President of the Government of Southern Sudan , as well as First Vice President of Sudan , from 2005 to 2011.

Regional elections were held in Southern Sudan between 11 and 15 April 2010 as part of the Sudanese general election.The result was a victory for Salva Kiir of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement, who received almost 93% of the vote. [1]
Probably more important than the reorganisation was the Juba Declaration, signed by Salva Kiir and General Paulino Matiep on 8 January 2006. Matiep commanded the South Sudan Defence Forces (SSDF), the largest and best-equipped militia (about 50,000 men) that remained beyond the SPLA's control.
In July 2013, the entire cabinet, including Machar, was dismissed by Kiir on the ostensible reason to decrease the size of government. However, Machar said that this was a step towards dictatorship on the part of Kiir and that he would seek to challenge Kiir for the presidency. [9] In December 2013 a related coup d'état was put down.
