The company was founded in 1950 by A. Alfred Taubman. [2] In 1953, it opened its first shopping center, North Flint Plaza, in Flint, Michigan. In 1964, the company opened its first enclosed mall, Southland Mall, in Hayward, California.
The first operational store on the site was a 173,000-square-foot (16,100 m 2) Sears department store, which opened for business on October 30, 1963. [2] The mall was first announced in 1971 by developer Leonard L. Farber, who also developed Pompano Square (now Pompano Citi Centre) in Pompano Beach, Florida.
The mall features prominent specialty retailers such as Apple Store, Volcom, Cotton On, Sephora, and White House Black Market. [4] The center is the largest enclosed and conventional shopping mall in Seminole County and the third largest in total by square footage in Central Florida behind The Mall at Millenia and The Florida Mall.
By late 2005, business at the mall had stagnated due to competition with The Mall at Millenia and Orlando Premium Outlets, as well poor visibility of the mall from Interstate 4 and a general decline in tourism. Belz contracted the mall's daily management out to General Growth Properties, who planned to more closely target local shoppers. [18]
