In a 3D scene a cryptomatte image can be created that assigns a unique ID to each object. The objects usually also have distinct colours that make a scene with many objects very colourful. The ID matte can be used to pick one or more objects in a scene. The ID matte can either be exported or it can be used by the 3D software itself for compositing.

Blender Game Engine was developed in 2000 with the goal of creating a marketable commercial product to create games and other interactive content, in an artist-friendly way. Key code in the physics library (SUMO) did not become open-source when the rest of Blender did, which prevented the game engine from functioning until version 2.37a.
An architectural render showing different rendering styles in Blender, including a photorealistic style using Cycles Lunar Crater Radio Telescope conceptual design with the Moon and Earth rendered in Blender. Blender includes three render engines since version 2.80: EEVEE, Workbench and Cycles. Cycles is a path tracing render engine.

When rendering scenes containing many objects, testing the intersection of a ray with every object becomes very expensive. Special data structures are used to speed up this process by allowing large numbers of objects to be excluded quickly (such as objects behind the camera).

Z-buffering was first described in 1974 by Wolfgang Straßer in his PhD thesis on fast algorithms for rendering occluded objects. [1] A similar solution to determining overlapping polygons is the painter's algorithm , which is capable of handling non-opaque scene elements, though at the cost of efficiency and incorrect results.
