Hughes Springs is a city in Cass and Morris counties in the U.S. state of Texas. At the 2020 census , its population was 1,575. [ 4 ] The town was heavily damaged by an EF2 tornado on November 4, 2022 .

Hughes Springs Independent School District is a public school district located in Hughes Springs, Texas . Located in Cass County, [1] a small portion of the district extends into Morris County, including some of the city of Lone Star. [2] In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. [3]
Texas State Highway 49 passes through the town center, leading northwest 9 miles (14 km) to Hughes Springs and southeast 16 miles (26 km) to Jefferson. Texas State Highway 155 crosses Highway 49 southeast of the town center and leads northeast 14 miles (23 km) to Linden, the Cass County seat, and southwest 27 miles (43 km) to Gilmer.
Patman was the son of John N. and Emma (Spurlin) Patman, born near Hughes Springs in Cass County, Texas, on August 6, 1893. After graduating from Hughes Springs High School in 1912, he enrolled in Cumberland University Law School in Lebanon, Tennessee. Receiving his law degree in 1916 he was admitted to the Texas bar the same year. [2]
