The all-purpose lightweight individual carrying equipment (ALICE) is a set of load-carrying equipment adopted as United States Army Standard A on 17 January 1973 [1] to replace the M-1956 individual load-carrying equipment (ILCE) and M-1967 modernized load-carrying equipment (MLCE).
The field pack's placement at the rear of the pistol belt led to it being referred to colloquially as the "butt pack." The M-1956 pattern field pack featured two flaps, on the left and right inside, to cover the contents of the pack, and an approximately square top cover flap. This design was changed in the M-1961 field pack (see Modifications).
A modified olive green version of the pack, sometimes referred to by soldiers as a butt pack, has been utilized for a three-day training pack, in conjunction with the ALICE system, yet was not a designated component of it. Designed to supplement rather than replace the then-standard M-1956 load-carrying equipment , it was similar to its predecessor but used nylon rather than canvas duck.
