Judge Amos Morrill served in the Eastern District of Texas from 1872 to 1884. He was succeeded by Chauncy B. Sabin (1884 to 1890) and David E. Bryant (1890 to 1902). In 1902, when the Southern District was created by Act of Congress, Judge Bryant continued to serve in the Eastern District of Texas.
The Southeastern District is one of the 35 districts of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS). It encompasses Washington, D.C., and the states of Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, as well Maryland with the exception of Garrett County at its western end; it also includes York and Lancaster Counties in Pennsylvania.
The Southeast District comprises 72 congregations in North Carolina, South Carolina, Eastern Georgia, Eastern and Central Tennessee, and most of Virginia. It was formerly named the Thomas Jefferson District, after the author of the United States Declaration of Independence and third President of the United States.
