Big Blue is the official mascot for the Old Dominion Monarchs. He is an anthropomorphic lion that performs at Old Dominion University athletic events, fundraisers, and commencement ceremonies. The nickname and mascot for the "Monarchs" was adopted just prior to ODU's split from the College of William & Mary system in 1961. [ 1 ]
ODAC logo from 1976 to 2010. The conference was founded in May 1975 as the Virginia College Conference. [1] On January 1, 1976, the name was changed to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The 1976–77 season was the first in which championships were offered. In 1980, Maryville College joined and became the first member outside of Virginia.
