Topic: Rondo SX 3 Lap Steel -- First Impression. Ken Koellner. From: Massachusetts, USA. Posted 21 Aug 2024 6:11 pm. I started playing square neck reso a couple months ago. I play mandolin mandolin but repetitive stress flatpicking has me laying off that for a while and I figure I could finger pick reso so I could continue to go to bluegrass jams.

I've been playing lap steel guitar for about 7 years now. I depend on the musical talents of others to figure out how to play a song and then tab it out. If it wasn't for Bert, I imagine my playlist would look pretty pathetic. About a third of my performance repertoire is Bert's arrangements with backing tracks. And he gave them all away for free.
The Steel Guitar Forum. I spent a lot of time researching where to buy a lap steel, 6 or 8 strings, which tuning and so on. I am beyond happy that I did my homework. Melbert Guitars did not disappoint!! I not only own a lap steel, I own a custom lap steel. The workmanship is very high quality and the builder has a wealth of knowledge to share.
My choice for years now are Everly Music strings. I have them on both my regular guitars, on my Fender Bass, my lap steel and on my 2 pedal steels. I have the sets made up for me. No extra charge. _____ 300 watt Tube Works Bass Head, Peavey Bass Amp, Hand made George Washburn Spirit, Fender Tele', Native American Flute, Rogue 6 string lap steel
I used those Stew Mac gauges for my first few lap steels and then it occurred to me that if the spacing is made progressively wider, then the slant angle would be different from string to string at the same fret and that might be problematic for some players so I stopped using the Stew Mac gauges for lap steels and use them only for guitar and banjo nuts.
I'm looking for a nice looking bridge for a string-through body set-up for a lap steel build. Preferably something rounded so that it's easy on the strings. I know that some guys economize and use 3/8" threaded rod or whatever, but I guess I'd like form and function. I have not been at this building thing long enough to understand what Stewmac ...
Someone has kindly gifted me a very acceptable-sounding 'knock off' of a Weissenborn lap steel. I'm pondering upon how to best tune it. First instinct was to emulate my Dobro (1-6: D,B,G,D,B, E - for relative minor applications), but would it make more sense - and be more versatile - with a C6th tuning?
The Jerry Byrd recommend bar is 3/4 x 2 3/4" with an indentation in the back. The smaller and lighter bar is easier to pick up and use just the tip as well as just move around more. Things that are all important to non-pedal playing. The indentation in the back is for your thumb to push out the bar for reverse slants.
