A transit hotel is a short-stay hotel that is situated in the transit zone of international airports, where passengers on extended waits between planes (typically a minimum of six hours) can stay while waiting for their next flight. The hotel is within the airside security/passport checkpoints and close to the airport terminals. [1]
The airport was named after José Joaquín de Olmedo, a notable Ecuadorian poet, first mayor of Guayaquil, and former president of Ecuador. It was changed from Simón Bolívar International Airport, which is currently the name of the airports in Caracas, Venezuela, and Santa Marta, Colombia.
The new airport commenced operations on 20 February 2013 following the closure of the old airport the night before. The first flights scheduled to arrive at the new airport were TAME flight 302 from Guayaquil (domestic), and LAN flight 2590 from Lima, Peru (international). Arrival times were scheduled for 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. respectively.
San Cristóbal Airport is the local airport and connects to the mainland. [7] An Airbus A319 jet operates daily from Guayaquil on the mainland. [22] The port is situated in Bahía Naufragio (Shipwreck Bay) to the southwest of the town. Boat companies conduct tours for tourists. [8] Buses and taxis operate in the town. [12]
