In December 2013, Dial Global was, in turn, acquired by Cumulus Media. Prior to the sale's completion, Dial Global re-assumed the Westwood One name. After the completion of the purchase, Westwood One was merged into the Cumulus Media Networks division (the former ABC Radio Networks).
Westwood One announced its merger with Dial Global in August 2011, closing it on October 21, 2011. On September 4, 2013, Dial Global, which had been bought by Cumulus Media, assumed the name Westwood One and absorbed Cumulus Media Networks (previously ABC Radio and Citadel Media).
Westwood One had a long-standing relationship with CBS Radio. CBS' parent company owned the network for approximately ten years (1998–2008) and, through the CBS Radio Network, maintained control of the production of certain programming, including NFL games, an arrangement that continued following Westwood One's acquisition by Dial Global through the end of the 2011 NFL season.
The new company was named Unistar. That entity, in turn, was bought by Westwood One in 1993. The music networks were run as a self-branded division of Westwood One until 2006, when the agreement with Dial Global began.
Under Dial Global, some of the older-style songs are making a comeback on the Westwood One format. ABC discontinued its Timeless service early in 2010; that same year, Music of Your Life added more 1960s oldies to its playlist. iHeartMedia's Format Lab also features at least two adult standards formats.
WMBS is an affiliate of Westwood One/Dial Global "Adult Standards" nostalgia format, and has been an affiliate of the CBS radio news network for virtually its entire existence. WMBS is the only station in the Pittsburgh Radio Market to carry the CBS World News roundup which celebrated its 70th anniversary on the air in 2008. [ 8 ]
Compass, in conjunction with Dial Global, began broadcasting a slate of Sunday afternoon games from the National Football League beginning in the 2009 NFL season. These broadcasts competed with the NFL on Westwood One and the Sports USA Radio Network.
The network was founded by the original Westwood One in 2005 in response to the rapid rise in popularity of such formats. S.A.M. has absorbed Jones Variety Hits upon acquisition of Jones Radio Networks by Triton Media Group's Dial Global division (now the modern Westwood One) effective September 30, 2008.
