The State Highway 78 Bridge at the Red River replaced a suspension bridge that collapsed on January 15, 1934. The former bridge had been opened as a toll bridge in July 1927. It was purchased by Oklahoma and Texas for use as a free bridge. [3] It collapsed in a storm after the swinging bridge's wire cables became twisted and snapped. [3]
The Bogoda bridge is over 400 years old and made entirely from wooden planks, which are said to have come from one tree. [citation needed] It is an exclusive construction as it has an 2.4 metres (7.9 ft) tall tiled roof structure for its entire span of nearly 15 metres (49 ft) length with a 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) breadth.
The Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway (MK&T) built its own railroad bridge across the Red River in 1872 and began drawing traffic at the expense of Colbert's ferry. Colbert got federal permission to build his own bridge in 1874. A major flood destroyed both bridges about a year later, so Colbert quickly put his old ferry back in service.

The bridge was located approximately one mile southwest of the present townsite. A Texas State Historical Marker alongside Farm To Market Road 920 denotes the spot of the original bridge today. The wooden bridge was used for a portion of the Butterfield Overland Mail stage route used for only a few months between August 1860 and March 1861.
