It was formed in July 1965 from the merger of three districts: the Garden Grove Elementary School District (established 1875 [5]), the Alamitos School District (1880s) and the Garden Grove Union High School District (1921). In 2004, the district received the Broad Prize for Urban Education. Twice before, it had been a Broad Prize finalist. [6]

The school is in Studio City. The school was opened in 1924 under the name Carpenter Street School [2] and is still in the same location. The Administrative Building was constructed in 1938 in PWA Moderne styling. [3] The current principal of the school since 2010 (as of August 2021) is Joseph Martinez and the assistant principal is Melodie Hong.
1955 William Paden School – located at 444 Central Avenue 1984 Elementary school was closed. 1992 It was reopened as an elementary school. This eventually changed to K-8. 2006 Grades 6–8 were closed. 1961 Donald Lum School – located at Otis Street and Sandcreek Avenue 2017 School was closed.
