Hatyai University first became a college on 9 April 1997. with the inaugural ceremony held on 20 April 1999. On 4 June 2003, it became a university.
The project was approved on 17 August 1971 and construction began at the Hat Yai campus of the university. The first cohort of medical students was accepted in June 1973, consisting of 35 students. Teaching was done in the Faculty of Science for the preclinical years and Hatyai Hospital and Songkhla Hospital during the clinical years.
The campus in Hat Yai was opened in 1971 and is now the main campus, with more than 50% of the university's students. Other campuses were established in Phuket (1977) and Surat Thani (1990).
