On September 5, 1950, Douglas Seaman purchased Western Welding & Manufacturing, a small machine shop in Milwaukee that was founded in 1943. Western mainly handled small, one-off welding jobs for large manufacturers. A friend suggested to Seaman that he should start manufacturing snowplows as a way to diversify his business, which he did.

John C. Pritzlaff was an immigrant from Pomerania, Prussia, who came to Milwaukee in 1841, before Wisconsin was a state. [1] In 1850 he, August Suelflohn, and Henry Nazro opened a small hardware store on Third Street called John Pritzlaff and Company. Pritzlaff became the sole owner in 1866. [2]
