Broadway Pier is a pier in San Diego, California, located on San Diego Bay at the intersection of Broadway and North Harbor Drive. It houses one of San Diego's two cruise ship terminals.
At the foot of the pier is the Junior Seau Pier Amphitheatre, which hosts numerous events throughout the year. The Junior Seau Beach Community Center, also known as the Beach Recreation Center, is a 17,000 square feet (1,600 m 2 ) facility located near the pier that includes a gymnasium, meeting room, stage, and kitchen. The main facility, at B Street Pier in downtown San Diego, along North Harbor Drive, has three cruise berths. The port also redeveloped the historic Broadway Pier to create a second cruise-ship pier and terminal, which opened in December 2010. [6] As of 2019, San Diego is the third-busiest cruise port in California.
On 15 September 1946, the Secretary of the Navy re-designated the repair base Naval Station, San Diego. By the end of 1946, the base had grown to 294 buildings [ 3 ] with floor space square footage of more than 6,900,000 square feet (640,000 m 2 ), berthing facilities included five piers of more than 18,000 feet (5,500 m) of berthing space.
This redevelopment project proposed to move Harbor Drive 40 feet (12 m) to the east and build an esplanade from the B Street Pier to the former Navy Pier along Harbor Drive. It also included public art displays, tree groves and open spaces, while continuing San Diego's tradition of having a working waterfront, according to Port plans. [2]
The company used the bridge for a trolley, part of the San Diego Class 1 Streetcars, which connected OB with downtown San Diego and encouraged the development of both Ocean Beach and Mission Beach. [12] The bridge was demolished in January 1951, thereby cutting off through traffic to Ocean Beach from the Mission Beach and Pacific Beach communities.
