Kildallan townland was the site of the earliest Christian church in the parish of Kildallan and the parish took its name from the townland. The church was traditionally founded by the Ollamh Érenn or Chief Poet of Ireland, Dallán Forgaill at the end of the 6th century.
The earliest surviving mention of the town's name is in the Book of Magauran, which was written in or around 1344. Poem 31, stanza 6 refers to the death of Tomás Mág Samhradháin, Chief of the McGovern clan from 1303-1343. Alan and Clodagh Hawe both worked in education. Alan Hawe, who was a native of Windgap in the south-west of County Kilkenny, [2] [5] [6] was deputy principal at Castlerahan National School, which is very close to Barconey (Robinson), the townland where the family home was located, while Clodagh Hawe was a teacher at Oristown National School, just south-east of Kells in the north of County Meath.
Kildoagh was located in the ballybetagh of Bally Gortnekargie (Irish Baile Gort na Carraige, meaning 'The Town of Rock Field'). The 1609 Ulster Plantation Baronial Map depicts the townland as Kildough. [3] [4] The 1652 Commonwealth Survey spells the name as Kildogh. The 1665 Down Survey map depicts it as Kildough. [5]
