Cacaxtla (Nahuatl pronunciation: [kaˈkaʃtɬaːn]) is an archaeological site located near the southern border of the Mexican state of Tlaxcala. It contains a sprawling palace with vibrantly colored murals painted in Maya style. The nearby site of Xochitecatl was a more public ceremonial complex associated with Cacaxtla.
According to the National Biodiversity Information System of Comisión Nacional para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad (CONABIO) in Meseta de Cacaxtla Flora and Fauna Protection Area there are over 1,215 plant and animal species from which 81 are in at risk category and 62 are exotics. [2] [3]
Tlaxcala's two major archaeological sites are Xochitécatl and Cacaxtla. Xochitécatl was built between 300 and 400 A.D., [ 20 ] and probably reached its peak between 600 and 800 A.D. There is evidence that occupation of the sites extends much further back in time than the early city’s known habitation.
Santa Ana Nopalucan or Santa Anita, was previously what they used to call it, due to the fact that it possessed few inhabitants. There were clay regions which had formed vast areas of 'Lagunillas', which were used during the colonial period for the grazing of livestock, and also where salt was obtained in the gaps.
