Only smaller diameter (12 Fr or less in adults) nasogastric tubes are appropriate for long-term feeding, so as to avoid irritation and erosion of the nasal mucosa. These tubes often have guidewires to facilitate insertion. If feeding is required for a longer period of time, other options, such as placement of a PEG tube, should be considered.
These tubes are usually a short term fix, as they can have a higher risk for aspiration. Patients are usually given a Keofeed as a quick solution, allowing time for the patient and/or family/caregiver to decide if a Peg Tube or other long term feeding tube is the right decision. PEG properly refers to a procedure to place the tube, but not the tube itself. A G-tube placed with an open procedure may be functionaly equivilant to one placed percutaneously. Clearly refering to a tube so placed as a "PEG" is incorrect, yet one often hears this. I tried to adjust the article to reflect this distinction.
