Ototoxicity is the property of being toxic to the ear (oto-), specifically the cochlea or auditory nerve and sometimes the vestibular system, for example, as a side effect of a drug. The effects of ototoxicity can be reversible and temporary, or irreversible and permanent. It has been recognized since the 19th century. [1]
Gentamicin is a type of aminoglycoside [5] and works by disrupting the ability of the bacteria to make proteins, which typically kills the bacteria. [5] Gentamicin is naturally produced by the bacterium Micromonospora purpurea, [9] [5] was patented in 1962, approved for medical use in 1964. [10]
Side effects from using ear drops used to remove ear wax are uncommon, but may result in discomfort, irritation, or pain. [5] Antibiotic ear drops may cause ear discomfort, pain, or itching. [1] When cold ear drops are used, it may cause brief but severe dizziness and/or vertigo. [6]
The incidence of inner ear toxicity varies from 7 to 90%, depending on the types of antibiotics used, susceptibility of the patient to such antibiotics, and the duration of antibiotic administration. [20] Another serious and disabling side effect of aminoglycoside use is vestibular ototoxicity. [19]
Various ototoxic effects are manifested by using antimalarial drugs, with dizziness being one of the most common one. Other effects include vestibular symptoms, hearing loss and tinnitus, which can appear to be both temporary or permanent. [25] Nonetheless, the underlying mechanisms of antimalarial-induced ototoxicity are still poorly understood.
These are used in conjunction with hydrocortisone aceponate acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, miconazole nitrate has antifungal properties, and gentamicin is an antibiotic. The medication is used through ear drops and works to kill the foreign agent, prevent further spread, and mitigate symptoms. [7]
Otomycosis commonly worsens from overuse of antibacterial ear drops, which should never be used for more than 7 days. In such cases the fungus is an opportunist that results from antibacterial suppression of the normal bacterial flora, combined with the steroid the drops also contain.
Ear drops are the mainstay of treatment for external otitis. Some contain antibiotics, either antibacterial or antifungal, and others are simply designed to mildly acidify the ear canal environment to discourage bacterial growth. Some prescription drops also contain anti-inflammatory steroids, which help to resolve swelling and itching.
