In July 1952, with the nationwide adjustment of college and university departments, the Civil Engineering Department of Jiaotong University was relocated to Tongji University. [1] In September, he received his graduation certificate from Tongji University. [1]
The Chinese-German College for Postgraduate Studies is sponsored by Tongji-University and the DAAD as well as by numerous companies that have among others donated eighteen chairs and support the project by presentation, visits and contacts.

Wu returned to China in 1996 and continued to teach at Tongji University. In June 1996, he was appointed deputy dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, rising to dean in 2003. After this office was terminated in September 2009, he became assistant to the president, serving until September 2011.
He was a visiting scholar at California State University between 1989 and 1990, a visiting research fellow at Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1993, and research fellow at the University of Birmingham from 1996 to 1997. [2] In April 2014, he became vice president of Tongji University, rising to president in July 2018. [citation needed]
