Physicists can measure when they can find the operations by which they may meet the necessary criteria; psychologists have to do the same. Manipulation checks are measured variables that show what the manipulated variables concurrently affect besides the dependent variable of interest. In experiments, an experimenter manipulates some aspect of a process or task and randomly assigns subjects to different levels of the manipulation ("experimental conditions").
This is not the same as reliability, which is the extent to which a measurement gives results that are very consistent. Within validity, the measurement does not always have to be similar, as it does in reliability. However, just because a measure is reliable, it is not necessarily valid. E.g. a scale that is 5 pounds off is reliable but not valid.
