Selhurst Depot [10] [11] is located to the east of Selhurst station, and occupies a triangle of land bordered on one side by the Victoria lines and on another by the London Bridge lines. It was built on the site of the former Croydon Common Athletic Ground , where Crystal Palace F.C. played Football League matches between 1920 and 1924.

Selhurst railway station has frequent trains north to London Victoria, and London Bridge at peak times, and south to Sutton, Caterham and Epsom Downs via East Croydon and West Croydon. The Croydon Canal opened in 1809 linking the Grand Surrey Canal to Croydon, however the waterway was never successful, and in 1836, it was the first canal to be abandoned by an Act of Parliament.

The first four coaches became derailed when an electric train hit the buffers at West Croydon station in October 1948, crashed through a wall and damaged several cars. In 1912 the composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875–1912), who was a resident of Croydon, collapsed whilst on the station. This was due to overwork and pneumonia.
