The night hag or old hag is the name given to a supernatural creature, commonly associated with the phenomenon of sleep paralysis. It is a phenomenon in which the sleeper feels the presence of a supernatural, malevolent being which immobilizes the person as if sitting on their chest or the foot of their bed.
Some stories about running into a makuragaeshi in certain rooms and buildings can be seen in the temples of various lands in Japan. At Daiō-ji in Ōtawara, Tochigi Prefecture, there is a hanging scroll with a ghost drawn on it called the "Makuragaeshi Ghost" (Makuragaeshi no Yūrei), and it is said that if one hangs this scroll, one's pillow will be found to have turned upon morning.
