- Good discussion and details on the 1HZ 1HD-T 1HD-FT and 1HD-FTE family of engines. It would be interesting to see block/injection pump numbers with the bearing pictures, as late in 1992 Toyota changed the thickness of the injector washers, injection pump number, piston combustion bowl change and installed a larger fuel return line.
My land cruiser was a 1HD-T swap with H151 gearbox. Engine was rebuilt 2000 km ago, gearbox approximately 10'000 km) engine well tuned with hi flow turbocharger and a lot of horsepower... Now i stand in front of a decision, either buy a brand new HZJ78 and take the engine and everything from the old car or buying a VDJ78 and drop the wrench.

1hd.to Nice interface, no ads, download option… Maybe I’ve become too sceptical but I guess after all these years of soap2day, it’s really hard to find a trustworthy website to start a new journey with.
The 1HD-T is superior. 1HD-T has a factory turbo, direct injection, more power in stock form. There are issues with BEB's but that is fairly easily addressed. There is a lot more reliable power potential as a result of the direct injection system. 1HZ has no turbo and is indirect injection.
Although the 1HZ has the lowest barrier to entry, I think I will ultimately be happier with a 1HD-T or 1HD-FT. 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road (Daily) Current Build: "The Squirrel" 1991 FJ80 Poverty Pack
1HD-FTE roughly double the HD-T (can't remember a number) Higher injection pressure means better atomization of fuel, a more complete combustion of fuel on every cycle, cleaner exhaust, lower EGTs, higher power output per cc of fuel, less fuel burnt to do the same thing.
The cost of repairing a fuel pump on the 1HD FT and 1HD FTE has been a lot higher than the rebuild cost of a 1HD T pump. A plus for the 1HD FT,is that the BEB problem seemed to have been more or less sorted out by the time of its introduction (but still occurring). The 1HD T would have to be the winner in simplicity and availabilty.
There's a big difference reported from the 1HD-FTE owners I know and they put it down to injection timing. The one that is so advanced it hammers gets the best (reported) fuel economy. The one that is quietest is the most thirsty and gutless. It is the most retarded. Even though it's an electronic pump, you can rotate it to advance/retard.
Then yesterday/today the big one, the new Bad Boy for the 1HD-FTE. 35-38deg C ambient, but with XXi intercooler, airbox and dump pipe we made 359whp (266rwkw) at only 32psi boost. This is a testament to the XXi accessories and Gturbo efficiency. I couldn't be happier with the result AFRs ~ 18:1 average and are 18.5:1 at peak power.
