The theme song for this new series was an instrumental version of "Engine Roll Call" composed by Ed Welch. Two arrangements were recorded. One was used in the opening for the CITV airings of series 8, while the other was used as the opening for the PBS and Nick Jr. airings of series 8 & 10 in the US, as well as the closing music for series 8 & 18.

Thomas & Friends (formerly known as Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends) is a children's media franchise created by Britt Allcroft and currently owned by Mattel.The franchise revolves around an ensemble cast of anthropomorphic steam locomotives, including the main protagonist Thomas the Tank Engine as well as other vehicles, who work on the Island of Sodor.
The series focuses on the adventures of a younger version of Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends, including Percy, Nia, Kana, and Diesel. Throughout the episodes, they learn many life lessons and solve problems, while going around on their daily lives doing jobs, with help from each other and the other residents and visitors of the Island of Sodor.
Mitton shot 2,700 slates for Series 5, the most of any of the series he shot for Thomas, and music from seasons 3 and 4 play while recording the audio to 5.1 surround sound while the final cut uses stereo audio. [2] The filming for this season lasted from September 1, 1997, to April 30, 1998.
